Gary Michael Jones


Gary Michael Jones, a beloved brother, uncle, and Vietnam Veteran, passed away on April 25, 2024, at the age of 70. He was born on May 1, 1953, in Anaconda, MT, lived in Missoula for most of his adult life after the Vietnam War, until he called Anaconda his home once again in 2011 until his passing.
Gary was a man of many interests and hobbies. He had a passion for aviation, war memorabilia, shooting, and photography. He particularly enjoyed playing the guitar and listening to CCR on vinyl. As a pilot in the ‘80s, he served the Missoula County Sheriff’s Department, transporting prisoners around the state.
Gary’s proudest accomplishment was his service as a Vietnam War Veteran. He dedicated his life to serving his country and was honored for his bravery and commitment. He also cherished his late wife, Lynn, and his loyal companion, his dog, Buddy. Gary was an avid 2nd Amendment supporter, a lifetime NRA member, and FFL dealer.
In his free time, Gary loved hunting, shooting coyotes, and exploring nature, with Lost Creek Falls being his favorite place in the world. He had a no-nonsense attitude that endeared him to those who knew him. Gary will be remembered by all his nieces and nephews for taking them on their first airplane rides as kids.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Bernice Jones, his wife, Lynn, and his brother, Rocky. He is survived by his sisters, Tami Whittington and Jackie Johnson, and his nieces and nephews: Timmie Gallagher (John), Grant Kopp, Jay Johnson, Hallie Johnson, and Kane Whittington. He will also be missed by his great-nieces and nephews: Jaycie (Corbin) McAllister-Williams, Trent Kopp, Zoe Kopp, Rogan Kopp, Vivian Johnson, and Ruby McAllister-Williams.
In memory of Gary’s life, his family requests donations to the National Rifle Association (NRA) or the American Legion Post 21 in Anaconda or, go have a beer in his honor and support Smelter City Brewing, where he frequented. He will be missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and the country he proudly served.
