Lillian “Lil” Mae Johnson
Lillian “Lil” Mae Johnson (née Gransbury) passed away on March 20, 2024, in Anaconda, Montana, at the age of 92. She was born on August 23, 1931, in Anaconda.
Lil was a kind and generous mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who helped those in need to the best of her ability. Despite her more or less housebound situation in her last few years, she remained sociable and interested in her neighbors and community. Lil was beloved by her caregivers, who considered her as family. She enjoyed being included in holiday celebrations and appreciated the gestures of kindness, like dinners from neighbors such as the Cooks across the street. She frequented the Metcalf Center for company, lunches, and assistance with transportation and grocery shopping.
In her career, Lil showcased her talent as an artisan, creating beautiful porcelain dolls and ceramics that she also taught in the 1970s. She worked at Thompson’s Bar Lunch Counter, operated her own catering service, served at Warm Springs Kitchen, and excelled as a cook at the Reno Club. In her later years, Lil found joy in scrapbooking, gardening, crafts, and jigsaw puzzles. Her friends Harmony Dukett, Kathy Puccinelli, and Cheryl Dunne were instrumental in supporting her daughter, Terri Johnson Menzel, in providing care, allowing Lil to pass away at home as she desired.
Lil is survived by her loving daughter, Terri Johnson Menzel, and husband Craig Menzel, grandson Rodney Zamudio and wife Melissa, great-grandchildren Conner and Avery, granddaughter Cristina Menzel, and great-grandchildren Jennica Menzel and Henry Troup. She was preceded in death by her husband Aaron and son Carey.
Per Lil’s wishes, no services are planned. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Shriners Hospital in her memory.
