Michael Edward Short

Michael Edward Short, known to most as Mike, passed away peacefully March 3, 2026, in Anaconda, Montana, after his courageous battle with cancer. He was 70 years old.

Mike was born on October 12, 1955, in Mountain City, Tennessee. Raised in Butte, MT, he considered himself a “Butte Rat”. After graduating from Butte High in 1973, he proudly served his country in the US Army, a commitment that spoke to his character and sense of duty. After his military service, Mike built a life full of meaningful connections. He was previously married to Catherine Wickham, and together they welcomed their daughter, Laura. He later found lasting love with Tania Lazaro Short. They married in 2010, and the two shared a devoted partnership until his passing.

Anyone who knew Mike knew he was a genuinely good and caring man. His great sense of humor and quick wit could light up any room. He was always willing to lend a hand to others, never hesitating when someone needed help. Fishing and reading books were his true passion, and in his later years, he and Tania discovered a shared love of travel and exploring new places together.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Lorrine Short and sister, Linda. Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Tania Short; his daughters, Laura Nelson and Alexis Chelette-Wichrowski, and granddaughter, Riley. He is also survived by his siblings Charles Short and Sandy Short as well as nieces and nephews. His brother, Kent Short, passed away shortly after Mike.

May he find peace and rest on whatever waters lie beyond this life.

Per his wishes, no funeral service will be held. Instead, family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life on Saturday, June 27th, at the American Legion. Come share a story, a laugh, and a memory of Mike.
