MSU Extension Estate Planning Series coming to ADLC on Nov. 16

Montana State University Extension Family Economics Specialist, Dr. Marsha A. Goetting will present a free estate planning series in Anaconda at the Church of Christ (1 Stumptown Rd), Nov. 16, 2023. 

During her time in ADLC, Dr. Goetting will present on three topics. The first, "Families and Legacies: Challenging Decisions," will run from 10 a.m. to noon. Following a short break for lunch, she will resume with "To Quote Shakespeare: To have a trust or not have a trust… Aye, that is the question" from 1:30-3:30 p.m.. Finally, she will conclude by presenting "Estate Planning for Caregivers" from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Families and Legacies: Challenging Decisions

Do you know who will receive your property if you pass away without an estate plan? Do you know when wills or trusts have control over property and when they don’t? Dr. Marsha Goetting, Montana State University Extension Family Economics Specialist will answer these questions and also explore how you can avoid the cost of probate with payable on death designations (PODs), transfer on death registrations (TODs), and other beneficiary designations. In this informative, entertaining presentation, Dr. Goetting combines her appreciation of Montana wildflowers with her desire to help you remember strategies to make estate planning easier and less expensive. She will provide illustrations about how your title on real and personal property impacts who receives it upon your death.

Although revocable living trusts have existed for many years, they have recently gained more visibility. You may have read newspaper advertisements for free seminars on the benefits of a revocable living trust, or perhaps you’ve seen television commercials suggesting that everyone should have one. A revocable living trust can be an excellent tool for handling some types of financial affairs. But it is not an appropriate choice for everyone. Dr. Marsha Goetting, Montana State University Extension Family Economics Specialist, will explore the advantages and disadvantages of revocable living trusts and testamentary trusts. She will also investigate alternative legal arrangements that may accomplish your goals effectively, such as a durable power of attorney. She will keep you actively involved by having you answer questions using response clickers. 

Estate Planning for Caregivers/Alzheimer’s Storybook Program

This session will provide tools for caregivers who face “double” planning (for themselves and their loved one). It will also feature Financial, Estate/Legacy, and Legal Planning Tools for those in the early states of Alzheimer’s or related dementia. Finally, Dr. Goetting will present on how MSU Extension has used storybooks to teach children about Alzheimer’s.
