Since its establishment in 2015, the Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Urban Renewal Tax Increment Finance (TIF) District Board has awarded $1,228,631.49 in grants to businesses and organizations within the boundaries of the district – grants funded by what is called an "increment," the amount of tax revenue generated by growth within the district above the amount at the time of its formation.
And yet that roughly $1.2 million according to Kathleen Tarkalson, executive director of Discover Anaconda which administers the TIF, is just a fraction of the economic output the district has seen since then. Discover Anaconda places an estimate on the work completed on all projects at $4,914,525.96.
"The TIF investment is 1-to-4," Tarkalson said. "It's really beneficial not only to the businesses, to the recipients of the grant, but to the community as well. For every dollar invested by the TIF, they're investing three more dollars into the projects. It's really helping the community. These businesses are putting a ton of money into the town."
Just since January of 2022, the TIF has awarded:
• $31,000 for infrastructure projects;
• $92,001.50 for structural projects;
• $167,790 for fire suppression projects;
• $133,038.12 for facade projects;
• $31,852 for technical assistance;
• $20,000 for Durston Park beautification;
• And $3,470 for snow removal in the district.
In the interests of full disclosure, the Anaconda Leader has received $1,852 in TIF funds since January 2022 in the form of a technical assistance grant to help pay for the creation and maintenance of the Leader's website, anacondaleader.com.
