Vernon Charles “Ted” Cook

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Vernon Charles “Ted” Cook, on October 6, 2025, at the age of 90 in Anaconda, Montana. Known affectionately by his family as Teddie, he was a man whose love, humor, and presence filled every room—and every heart.

Ted was born on June 6, 1935, in Hamilton, Montana, to the late Virginia Cook, and was lovingly raised by his grandmother, Emma Cook. Growing up surrounded by animals, he developed a deep love for them—something that stayed with him throughout his life. 

After graduating high school, Ted proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Chicago. Following his service, he moved to Anaconda, where fate stepped in one night during a routine shift as a taxi driver. It was then that Joan Puccinelli stepped into his cab—and from that ride forward, the story of their 65-year love began. They shared 65 wonderful years of marriage and raised five children.

Ted worked briefly at the smelter before building a long and fulfilling career with the Anaconda Railroad, from which he retired. But his most important and proudest job was being a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Ted was immensely proud of his growing legacy, which includes 18 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren (and counting). We often joked that he had populated half of Anaconda, and the town felt like family to him. He never met a stranger—only future friends. His home was always open, filled with laughter, coffee, and love. For over 29 years, he carried on the daily coffee tradition started by Joan’s family, hosting countless cups of conversation at his kitchen table. 

Known for his sharp wit and quick humor, Ted remained a comedian and entertainer even in his final days. He had a deep sentimental streak, never shying away from showing his love and emotion. He was a strong support system for everyone in his life—attending countless school events, games, and celebrations for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was present, proud, and always cheering the loudest.

Ted will be remembered for his kind heart, his loyalty, his hospitality, and his unwavering devotion to those he loved. He was empathetic, open, smart, and deeply sentimental. A good coach, a great listener, and a better friend—he leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and community.

He is survived by his children: Stacey (Cliff), Nick (Lori), Vern (Barb), and Kevin (Wendy); 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan Cook; his son, Kenneth Cook; his grandson Ryan Cook, his mother, Virginia Cook; and the grandmother who raised him, Emma Cook.

Please join us in celebrating Ted’s life. Funeral Mass will be held at 2pm on Friday, October 10th at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 401 Alder St., Anaconda. Visitation will begin at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Ted are suggested to the Kenny Cook Scholarship, PO Box 82, Anaconda, MT 59711. 

Before saying goodbye, Ted always made sure his family felt safe and loved with a simple phrase:

“Be careful.” And “Call me when you get home.”

Ted left a legacy—glimpses of him live on in each one of us. In the way we walk, talk, treat others, and love one another, his spirit remains. He will live on through generations, woven into the hearts and lives of his family forever.
